The Institute of Banking and Finance held its first IBF Beacon Series at the Arts House on 21st January 2008. Distinguished from other events, the IBF Beacon Series feature topics close to the hearts of HR practitioners in the financial services industry, conducted in a small setting conducive for interactive dialogues.
For the inaugural event, we were privileged to have Cornell University's Professor Patrick M. Wright as our speaker.
In his engaging presentation entitled, “Building a Competitive Financial Workforce”, Prof Wright examined state-of-the-art approaches and strategies for recruitment and staffing, talent development and retention as well as employee engagement. Following which, the audience then participated in a dialogue session to discuss crucial HR issues that affect not just their respective organizations, but the financial industry as a whole.
A good mix of HR and industry leaders, from banking, insurance and training institutions, amongst the audience shared their perspectives on crucial Human Resources issues. Topics like identification and managing high-potential staff, quantitative measures to assess HR effectiveness, the paradigm shift required in managing the Gen-Y workforce, as well as CEO succession planning were raised and discussed.
