The Future of Technology & Operations in Banking

The IBF recently held its third instalment of the IBF Connect 2016 series at the Lifelong Learning Institute (LLI).

We were honoured to have Accenture's Jonathon Allaway, Deloitte's Thio Tse Gan and INTERPOL's Alexandru Caciuloiu to speak at the event. On the panel, moderated by Amelia Ching of FITA, we were also proud to have the participation of our esteemed IBF Distinguished Fellow; Susan Hwee, and IBF Fellows; Olivier Crespin and Stacey N. Lacy.

On opportunities and challenges for Fintech, three key trends were identified by the speakers in shaping the next generation of banking:

Increased regulation;
Technological innovation as a tool to increase business competiveness; and
Customizing and differentiating interaction with customers.

Even as the financial industry embraces technology, cyber security continues to be a major issue. The speakers also shared design principals that could help enhance cyber security. INTERPOL highlighted that there is an increasing number of cyber-crime and data breaches. This is due to growing number of cyber-attack services and devices that even a non-professional could use to steal data. Companies using untested technology also contributed to this rise.

During the panel session, the discussion centred on the challenges facing the industry and the various innovations that the banks are exploring to meet the evolving needs of customers.

	Presentation on "Cyber Security Trends" Thio Tse Gan, Cyber Risk Services Leader, Deloitte To build cyber security for the future of financial services, a different approach needs to be adopted. Financial services are increasingly exploring business opportunities in non-traditional areas and the advent of FinTechs accelerated by evolving technological capabilities are raising questions around risks that lack answers. In this presentation, Tse Gan shares five (5) design principles focused on balancing human insights with advanced analytics and cognitive intelligence to cover the spectrum of technology risks that financial services are increasingly exposed to. In the face of an unseen threat, an organisation's culture is the best defense and a culture of cyber savviness that adjusts with the evolution of technological changes can facilitate cyber resilience efforts in every situation to varying degrees of effectiveness. This presentation will also touch on the critical role cyber security plays in the adoption of disruptive innovations in financial services and how to navigate the exposures to cyber risk as financial services move towards digitization.

	Presentation by INTERPOL Alexandru Caciuloiu, Digital Crime Officer, Cybercrime Training Management, Cyber Innovation and Outreach Alexandru will take participants through the current threats and risk for the financial sector coming out of the cyber space and how INTERPOL is mitigating and countering these risks through their operational and research capabilities.
