Risk Management

"Risk management is a very wide and fascinating field. Over time, you learn to appreciate that any ‘complex’ aspect can be broken down into a few ‘simple’ blocks. More importantly, to facilitate effective decision-making; a common sense-based approach should never be forgotten or ignored."

Shivkumar Mahadevan (Shiv) is currently the Chief Risk Officer, Corporate & Institutional Banking for Standard Chartered Bank (SCB); with overall risk responsibility for all Corporate & Institutional clients across all geographies. Until recently he was the Regional Chief Risk Officer, ASEAN & South Asia, at SCB. Besides exercising direct control responsibility for Credit Risk and Market Risk profile of the Group, he is extensively involved in maintaining alignment with risk appetite by rebalancing risks or controls that may be required in response to internal and external factors.

Shiv has been in the financial services industry for over 23 years, of which the last 18 years have been with SCB where he has held various senior Risk roles across Singapore, Hong Kong, Dubai and Mumbai - covering multiple geographies around the world.

SCB was one of the first banks in Asia to be awarded the Advanced Internal Ratings Based Approach (AIRB) for Credit Risk (in 2008). Shiv was the Head of Portfolio Risk at that time and actively involved in this initiative.

He and his team successfully implemented the 'Appropriateness and Suitability framework' for the Financial Markets business across the bank. This helped put in place a robust framework to deal with any non-vanilla products extended to clients.

His team has successfully developed and implemented a Commodities Transaction Management Unit (2015) - which allows end to end process controls for all commodity related transactions.

Shiv is also actively engaged in various strategic initiatives of the bank across ASA. Shiv was conferred the IBF Fellow in 2016 award by the Institute of Banking and Finance Singapore (IBF). The IBF Fellow title recognises industry veterans who exemplify thought leadership and commitment to industry development. Shiv was awarded the 'List of Leading practitioners' by 'The Asian Banker' for the 'significant contribution to the future of the financial services industry in the area of risk management' (in 2015). He was the recipient of the 'Corporate Treasurer' Awards for 'Credit Approval Turnaround Times' (in 2014).

Shiv holds a degree in Electrical Engineering and a Post Graduate Diploma in Financial Management (PGDM) from Indian Institute of Management (IIM), Bangalore.

Shiv along with his wife Radhika, daughter Arpitha and son Aditya are all Singaporeans and have made Singapore their home.
