Biography

​Dr Alan Ong is the Medical Director of AIA Singapore. He also serves as Convenor of the Life Insurance Association’s (LIA) Health Insurance Subcommittee. He has over 15 years of experience in the public and private sectors.

He started his career as a clinician and subsequently joined the Ministry of Health (MOH) where he had the opportunity to gain experience in multiple portfolios. He also spent time in the Ministry of Trade and Industry, where he was responsible for developing policies to support SMEs and startups. After public service, he joined the Boston Consulting Group, where he worked on projects across a diverse range of industries. 

Dr Ong joined AIA Singapore as the Medical Director in 2018 and has played a leading role in the enhancement of AIA Singapore’s healthcare proposition, as well as improving the financial performance of AIA Singapore’s HealthShield portfolio. He has overseen the introduction of several first in market services, such as a personal case management service, as well as an early detection screening benefit. AIA Singapore was recognised as Health Insurance Company of the Year by the Asia Insurance Review in 2019. 

In his LIA capacity, he oversaw the standardisation of pre-authorisation forms for Integrated Shield Plans, and the revision of LIA’s Good Practices Guide on managing insurance panels. He also helped to coordinate Integrated Shield Plan insurers to align with government directions regarding coverage for COVID-19. He has represented LIA on MOH’s Fee Benchmark Advisory Committee and is one of LIA’s representatives on MOH’s Multilateral Healthcare Insurance Committee.
