Biography

A Chartered Insurer, John has close to 50 years of industry experience, having taken on different roles spanning across UK and Asia throughout his long career with the MSIG Group.

He first began his career in 1972 with General Accident (GA) Insurance in UK, and quickly rose through the ranks to become a branch manager at a comparatively young age.  Seeking bigger challenges, he undertook an overseas posting in 1986 to become GA's General Manager in Malaysia.

Following the acquisition of New Zealand Insurance, he led the Indonesia operations next as the President Director and was later promoted to regional Technical Services Chief based in Singapore. John continued to serve in senior positions for the company's operations in India, Japan and Thailand before becoming the Senior Vice President for MSIG in Singapore from 2003 to present.

Over the last 20 years, John's predominant focus was on the implementation of underwriting policy for property and casualty risks in addition to his supervisory roles in claims, reinsurance, marine and health insurance. He believes the selection of risk and adequate pricing are the essential ingredients attributing to underwriting profit but is also cognisant of the vagaries of the underwriting cycle.

John has been involved in various industry bodies and associations for many years. He was instrumental in establishing the British Business Group while in Mumbai; was the Chairman and member of the General Insurance Association's (GIA) Work Injury Compensation Committee; was a member of the Technical Committee under the Cyber Risk Management project led by the Monetary Authority of Singapore and is currently the Chairman of GIA's Autonomous Vehicle (AV) Workgroup.

John's leadership and contribution in the AV Workgroup has helped to shape the safety, regulatory and liability framework for the future of driverless vehicles on public roads and spaces. A keen motorist, John has researched extensively on the introduction of electric vehicles which he regards as the "new wave" in motor insurance.

He keeps to the life philosophy of staying active and up-to-date on exciting changes. He has always been interested in insurance claims and recently undertook a course to become a specialist mediator so that he can extend his involvement in this field where disputes between parties are common.

John is an active golfer, swims and runs regularly, and enjoys most sports as a spectator. He has travelled extensively in Asia, Europe and Africa, and hopes to continue doing so with his wife and two children.
